At the beginning of June, 16 students from Boston College US arrived in Ireland for a fun filled summer adventure under the watchful eye of the Boston College Ireland team. Living on campus in UCD accommodation, all students took a summer intern position in various businesses around Dublin and we were delighted to welcome Nicole and Trevor to Welltel for their internships.
Currently halfway through her 4 year maths major, Nicole has been working in our accounts department alongside the team and is gaining plenty of valuable experience. Following her exciting summer in Ireland, Nicole will return for the American College Football Classic taking place in the Aviva Stadium on September 3rd. As a member of the BC cheer squad, Nicole will be in Dublin to cheer on their team The Eagles when they take on Georgia Tech.
Speaking of her experience here Nicole said “By far my favorite thing about Ireland is the people. Everyone is so friendly, and wants you to experience the same love for their country as they have. There is never a day that goes by without someone recommending an exciting place to visit, or a good place to eat. The Irish pride everyone has here is great to experience, particularly watching the Euro Cup games.”
Trevor is a Finance major also approaching year 3 of his 4 years degree and has also been assisting in our accounts department, putting his financial skills to good use. Trevor has a keen interest in current affairs and is also a member of the Boston College water polo team.
When asked about his favourite things about Ireland Trevor said “Other than how friendly the people are here, my favorite part of Ireland is the amount of history and sights around every corner. Wandering around Dublin you see statues of various authors, political figures, and others that you would never expect to find here. Out in the countryside, seeing the Cliffs of Moher was amazing, and I would recommend it to anyone who comes to Ireland.”
It wasn’t all work and no play however as BC Dublin student co-ordinator Thea Gilien and Claire McGowan, Head of Student Affairs for BC Dublin had plenty of enjoyable and traditional Irish fun planned for the group. This included a weekend in Galway, a visit to the Cliffs of Moher and a GAA match in Croke Park as well as a visit to Giant’s Causeway and a hike in Wicklow. It’s fair to say they also witnessed Irish mother nature in all her glory experiencing weather of all 4 seasons during their two month stay here, a proper ‘Irish summer’. In between all the planned activities and family visits the students managed to plan a weekend away for themselves. Half went to the British open and soaked up a few days of golf while the other half of the group took in another European city and spent a few days in Amsterdam. All in all it’s safe to say the group returned to the U.S. with memories, experiences and new friendships they will never forget.
